RWSN has published a number of books and manuals for the selection and construction of appropriate and affordable technologies.

Technology Selection - and Buyer's Guide for Public Domain Handpumps and Drinking Water by Karl Erph, April 2007

Information on the Public Domain Handpumps available on the market and is intended to give assistance to all those, who are evaluating or intending to procure handpumps.
Rural Water Supply Technology Options - Handpumps, Mechanised Pumps and Surface Water by Erich Baumann and Karl Erph, September 2005 A small compendium of technology options for rural water supply. Briefly describing the various types of most common handpumps and providing information on motorised pumps such as submersible pumps, line shaft pumps, jet pumps, solar pumps and wind power pumps. It also gives some basic information on rainwater harvesting and intakes from surface water.
Technology Options in Rural Water Supply by Erich Baumann, September 2003  A small compendium of possible options of rural water supply technologies, starting from hand dug wells to small mechnised systems.  This was developed for Tanzania.  In other countries the selection of suitable technologies may differ.

SKAT published a series of manuals on drinking water supply.  Three of these publications are particularly relevant to RWSN as follows:

Hand Dug Shallow Wells by Seamus Collins, 2000, SKAT.

This manual deals with the planning, construction, management, operation and maintenance of hand-dug wells for water supply to communities.
Drilled Wells by Peter Ball, 2001, SKAT This manual explains in practical terms the mud drilling technique. It describes the use of fluid circulation in soft formations. It discusses well design, pumps, screen selection and pump testing.
Water Lifting by Erich Baumann, 2000, SKAT This manual describes in practical terms the various devises used to pump water from wells and boreholes. It discusses the application of the technologies and has a section with factsheets from the most common handpumps.
