A number of informative publications on cost-effective boreholes by RWSN and others. This includes guidelines and field notes as well as studies from Burkina Faso, Ethiopia,Sudan, Madagascar, Nigeria, Niger, Uganda and Zambia. The publications cover technical, socio-economic, environmental and managerial aspects of borehole provision.
Archive of literature on the hydrogeology of southern and east Africa (SADC Region)New in 2011The British Geological Survey (BGS) has just released its archive of technical literature on the hydrogeology of southern and east Africa to the public. This is a huge repository of unpublished data, reports, papers, manuals and maps which describe the hydrogeological work that has been undertaken in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region in the 20th century. The information can be downloaded free of charge. Visit: http://www.bgs.ac.uk/sadc/index.cfm for more information. Code of Practice for Cost-Effective Boreholes2010The Code of Practice for Cost Effective Boreholes (Water Well Construction), is based on international practice. It sets out nine principles that relate directly to the practicalities of borehole construction. It is recommended that these are adhered to in order to provide optimum value for money for investments in groundwater development for drinking water supplies over the long term. RWSN Field Notes2010Siting of Drilled Water Wells - A Guide for Project Managers This provides a step by step guide on the siting of drilled water wells. The essential requirements for a simple groundwater model are set out, including some basic explanations to help the reader establish a sound understanding of hydrogeology. It subsequently explains what needs to be taken into consideration when selecting a suitable site for drilling. This includes the requirements of the water well, and a comprehensive set of instructions on how the most suitable site should be determined. Key considerations with respect to the tender and contract documents are also set out, as well as some basic information regarding field work and contract management. The field note takes the reader through the process from consideration of the user needs right up to the process of engaging a drilling contractor to construct a drilled water well. Costing and Pricing - A Guide for Water Well Drilling Enterprises This field note is written for water well drilling enterprises and agencies which manage drilling projects. Using a step-by-step approach it gives clear guidance on how to cost and price the construction of drilled water wells. It also provides tips on business management. Practical, worked examples enable the reader to easily follow the costing method. It sets out bills of quantities and considers how to deal with risks and uncertainties as well as the tender process. 2009 Hand Drilling in Nigeria - Why Kill an Ant with a Seldgehammer? This field note provides an overview of hand drilling practices in Nigeria, which are being utilised to provide water sources for both domestic use and small scale irrigation. It is estimated that approximately 30,000 hand-drilled wells have been constructed throughout the country. Hand drilling as a business is being undertaken by many different individuals and businesses 2006 Ten-step Guide Towards Cost-effective Boreholes (English Version) Le forage d’eau à faibles coûts en dix étapes - Étude des coûts de forage en Éthiopie (French Verion) Increasing access to groundwater is a priority for sub-Saharan Africa. One key to this is to reduce the costs of conventional drilling and borehole construction. This field note, describing a recent study in Ethiopia sets out some of the ways in which this may be done.
A Brief History of Hand Drilled Wells in Niger (English Verion) Une brève histoire des puits forés à la main au Niger (French version) This field note describes the history of hand drilling and water-lifting techniques introduced in Niger over 30 years and now firmly in the hands of local enterprises, farmers and water users.
Who is going to drill the African boreholes? Private drillers form an essential segment of the borehole drilling sector in Africa. More needs to be known about their abilities and the contribution they can make. Case studies of entrepreneurial drilling companies in four African countries are used to illustrate business strategies and common constraints, and possible ways forward. 2004Solutions for Reducing Borehole Costs in Rural Africa This field note contends that the current cost of drilled boreholes in Africa can be halved by relaxing borehole specifications in favor of smaller diameter bores drilled by more maneuverable, lower cost equipment.
