Niger was selected as a focus country for the Cost-Effective Boreholes Flagship because of the extensive history of hand-drilled wells, spanning some 30 years
As a result of continued efforts by NGOs, an estimated 50 small-scale, local enterprises now provide hand augered wells for farmers and households in Niger. Over 5,000 wells have been hand-drilled, paid for by end users, as well as through projects. RWSN has been documenting and analysing the progress of hand drilling of water wells in Niger. The RWSN field note describes the history of hand drilling and water-lifting techniques introduced in Niger over 30 years and now firmly in the hands of local enterprises, farmers and water users. Recommendations for the way forward are included. In June 2007, experts from all over the world met for a ten-day hands on workshop in Matameye, Niger to exchange experiences and improve manual drilling technologies. Click here for the report, which provides a summary of the practical outcomes of a hand drilling experts’ workshop. It also provides an indication of the potential for hand-drilled wells in Niger, with a focus on the Zinder Region. The workshop was funded by the USAID West African Water Initiative (WAWI). |
