Focal Countries

The Cost-Effective Boreholes flagship is focusing it`s work on several countries within sub-Saharan Africa.

A short synthesis report of the findings from studies in Burkina Faso, Ghana and Zambia can be downloaded here. More specific information for these and other countries is available below.

Burkina Faso

The process of developing a Code of Conduct for the Optimisation of Water Well Drilling started in November 2009 with a study and the preparation of a draft code.

Ethiopia

RWSN, with the support of WSP-AF, undertook a detailed study of Ethiopia's borehole drilling sector (government, private sector and NGO).

Ghana

As part of the development of the Code of Practice, a study of the borehole drilling sector in Ghana was undertaken. It revealed that most of the expectations and principles of cost effective borehole provision have been taken on board in the country although they could be strengthened further. In general, the prices of boreholes in the country are not excessively high considering the cost incurred in producing them.

Mozambique

The Mozambique Drillers Association was formed in 2008.

.

Niger

RWSN has been documenting the experiences of hand drilling in Niger, and finding ways to enable others to learn from the 30 year history of this technology.

Nigeria

In 2008, a Water Well Drilling Association of Nigeria was established. In 2008 and 2009 studies were undertaken regarding cost-effective borehole drilling and hand drilling.

Sudan

Efforts to evolve a code of practice for cost-effective boreholes in Sudan are underway. A 2-day workshop, attended by over 120 participants was held in Khartoum in November 2009. The objective was to analyze the factors affecting cost-effective drilling in Sudan, share successful experiences from within the country and beyond and move towards evolving a Code of Practice.

The workshop included the development of an action plan for promoting cost-effective boreholes in Sudan and strengthening manual drilling as well as agreeing responsibilities for action and coordination among different stakeholders.

Uganda

In 2010 the Ministry of Water and Environment, with support from UNICEF undertook an in-depth study to assess the groundwater investigation, drilling and supervision capacity in Uganda, both in terms of available equipment as well as technical staff capacity. The study recommends measures to enhance capacity both in terms of quality of works and cost-efficiency.

Zambia

In 2009, a study of the Zambian water well drilling sector was undertaken. The study identified the strengths and weaknesses with respect to borehole drilling in Zambia and identified key proceedures for cost-effective drilling for the country.
