Capacity Building
|
Since the network's foundation, RWSN has sought to build capacity at local level as a platform for promoting sustainable development. It has been particularly active in the fields of technology transfer, supply mechanisms and private sector involvement.
Many countries have begun successful local production of handpumps and other rural water supply and sanitation equipment. RWSN supports these efforts since they reduce dependence on imports and improve sustainability. |
Technical AssistanceThrough demand-based technical assistance to the private sector, RWSN facilitates market-driven local industrial capacity building particularly in mass production and quality assurance processes. It provides the private sector information on specifications, internal quality control and production procedures/guidelines. It promotes technology transfer and South-South co-operation.
RWSN places greater emphasis on effective service delivery mechanisms rather than on local production. RWSN assists sector agencies in developing effective service delivery mechanisms through economic feasibility studies for local production, technical assistance to local or regional manufacturers, strengthening dealership networks and promoting policies that encourage the private sector to play a bigger role in service delivery. |
Procurement and Quality ControlRWSN promotes and supports procurement procedures, which include the local private sector, in the supply of handpumps, as well as a whole range of related services, such as drilling, installation, after-sales service, spare parts supply, and training. RWSN promotes an awareness of the importance of quality control and quality assurance among manufacturers and purchasers. Its advocacy of pre-delivery inspection of handpumps is a step in this direction. |
