Hand Drilling in Niger - Experts Drilling Workshop

This report provides a summary of the practical outcomes of a hand drilling experts’ workshop held in June 2007 in Niger. It also provides an indication of the potential for hand-drilled wells in Niger, with a focus on the Zinder Region. The workshop was funded by the USAID West African Water Initiative (WAWI).

The goal of the “hand drilling experts workshop”, held in Zinder region, Niger, from 12th to 21st June, 2007 was to examine current practices in Niger for manual well drilling and to suggest ways to improve the techniques and tooling in order to expand the types of formation where manual drilling can be used successfully. In 2006/7 well drillers trained by Enterprise Works/VITA are installing 39 wells for UNICEF in Matameye, a Department south of Zinder. Problem sites identified during these drilling operations were selected as sites where the experts could apply their skills and experience.
