Cost Effective Boreholes
Sustainable Rural Water Supply
Self Supply
Handpump Technology
The water and sanitation MDGs in Africa can only be reached by progress in rural areas where advancement is the most difficult. Across Africa, rural households lag well behind urban ones in coverage and quality of water services yet get a lesser share of public investment per capita. Sector programs typically bypass the poorest and most remote communities.

In order to reach its goal, RWSN's efforts are co-ordinated under four themes, known as flagships, each with the following purpose:

  • Cost-effective boreholes (CEB) policies adopted and practices followed which bring about cost-effective borehole provision in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Sustainable rural water supplies (SRWS) – ensuring that improved water supply sources continue to function over time.
  • Self supply (SS) - private investment and household initiative are incorporated into national and international strategies for rural water supply improvement.
  • Handpump technologies (HT) – users, private enterprises and policy makers to are able to make informed decisions regarding handpump technologies with appropriate selection, standardisation, procurement and simplified maintenance.
