Ensuring that rural dwellers around the world do not have to walk for hours to collect sufficient and safe drinking water is a huge challenge. This short article raises issues for those of us who are involved in trying to improve rural water supplies, whether as donor, Government or NGO; program manager or practitioner. It takes a hard look at our limited achievements, points to areas where our approaches need to be radically im-proved and sets some challenges.

The Rural Water Supply Network (RWSN) is a global knowledge network, which is thematic in nature, focusing on four flagships: cost-effective boreholes, self supply, sustainable rural water supplies and handpump technologies. This document describes the roles and responsibilities of the various RWSN players and sets out the procedures for the renewal of the full steering committees.

The Rural Water Supply Network (RWSN) Strategy (2012 to 2014) has been jointly developed and is officially endorsed by IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre, Skat Foundation, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC, WaterAid, the Water and Sanitation Programme (WSP) of the World Bank and UNICEF. These institutions cooperate under a Statement of Common Intent for RWSN (2012 to 2014).
