2010 was witness to the culmination of five years of work to

  1. understand and define the main factors that contribute to quality construction of drilled water wells at a realistic price,
  2. (examine and determine good practices within sub-Saharan Africa and
  3. synthesise these into a clear and user-friendly document.

Explicit in-country work to both understand and improve the cost-effectiveness of drilled water wells, under the RWSN umbrella has been undertaken in Nigeria, Uganda, Sudan, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Niger, Burkina Faso, Zambia and Ghana from 2005 up to 2009. This is a major achievement given that from 2005 different donors have funded the cost-effective boreholes thematic area (flagship) of RWSN as a set of 12 to 15 month discrete projects from 2005 up to 2009.
